Hurricane  Preparedness

South Carolina’s hospitals care for people under the most disastrous conditions. Given our expansive coastline on the Atlantic Ocean, our state and its people face the real threat of hurricanes each year. From the devastation of Hurricane Hugo in 1989 to the thousand-year flood that ravaged the Midlands in 2015, communities rely on hospitals even greater in times of emergency.

In order to support our hospitals during such times, SCHA becomes a 24-hour operation center for the duration of hurricanes and other natural disasters. We also work closely with the Department of Public Health and other state agencies to ensure hospitals have the appropriate evacuation information and procedures and assist with the transfer of patients as necessary.
