Information on COVID-19 Therapeutics for Medical Providers
As the latest guidance for COVID-19 therapeutics continues to evolve, SCHA wants to ensure that prescribers have the latest information. The following guidance includes the latest therapeutics update provided by DHEC on April 4, 2022.
General Information
Guidance on prescribing of and prioritization of patients to receive COVID-19 therapeutics is available from the NIH COVID-19 Treatment Guidelines.
HHS has created a website to help locate treatment options. This site currently shows locations for Evusheld, molnupiravir, and Paxlovid. They hope to soon have all therapeutics visible on this site.
If you are interested in becoming a provider for one or more of these therapeutics, please complete this form. As more supply becomes available, we will be adding additional sites. Once reviewed you will be contacted by someone from the DHEC Team about how to register for the proper federal sites required for daily and weekly reporting.
For assistance or more information please contact COVID19DRUG@dhec.sc.gov.
Monoclonal Antibodies
Regen-COV and Bam/Ete are unlikely to retain activity against Omicron, according to the FDA. As such on 1/24/22 HHS and the FDA announced Lilly’s bamlanivimab plus etesevimab and Regeneron’s casirivimab plus imdevimab (REGEN-COV) are not currently authorized for use anywhere in the U.S., due to the prevalence of Omicron.
Sotrovimab & BA.2 – FDA has limited the use of sotrovimab in regions of high BA.2 variant prevalence. This now includes R1, R2, R5, R9, and R10. Therefore, sotrovimab is no longer authorized for use at this time in the following states and territories: R1: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont R2: New Jersey, New York, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands R5: Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Wisconsin R9: Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada, Guam, American Samoa, Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands, Republic of Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia R10: Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, Washington. It is available at 45 sites statewide (see table below).

Evusheld is currently available through 14 sites across the state as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for immunocompromised patients who may not mount an adequate immune response to vaccination or are not able to be fully vaccinated with any available COVID-19 vaccine due to severe adverse reactions. South Carolina has been allocated a limited number of doses thus far, but as more product becomes available, more sites will be added.

Oral Anti-viral Drugs
DHEC is encouraging providers to use oral antivirals more freely within the EUA limits.
Molnupiravir and Paxlovid are currently available at Walgreens across the state. These products do require a prescription from a medical provider and must be prescribed in accordance with the Emergency Use Authorization from the FDA. In addition, Ingles Pharmacy locations will also begin receiving antivirals. Fact sheets for providers are available for both molnupiravir and Paxlovid.
They should not be prescribed to patients to have “on hand” in case they test positive or become sick. Provider offices only may contact a Walgreens representative at (866) 935-0867 to help identify locations with antivirals in stock in the state. If a patient is not close to one of these 24-hour locations or has does not have transportation, Walgreens will ship it for free to the patient, overnight via FedEx. Please only provide this number to providers!
Prescribing providers may use results from OTC COVID tests, providing they document in the patient’s record a picture of the test results or the actual test results were viewed by prescribing providers staff and the patient attested that the results belong to them.

In addition, HRSA is also distributing Molnupiravir and Paxlovid directly to select Federally Qualified Health Centers. Those sites can be found on their website.
Test to Treat Program
A newly launched nationwide Test to Treat initiative gives individuals an important way to rapidly access free lifesaving treatment for COVID-19. In this program, people are able to get tested and – if they are positive and treatments are appropriate for them – receive a prescription from a health care provider, and have their prescription filled all in one location. These “One-Stop Test to Treat” sites will be available at hundreds of locations nationwide, including pharmacy-based clinics, federally-qualified community health centers (FQHCs), and long-term care facilities.
Currently there are 44 CVS locations that have been onboarded.

Anti-viral Drug
VEKLURYTM (remdesivir) is not allocated by the federal government and is available to be ordered commercially from AmerisourceBergen. Following the recent statement from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) COVID-19 Treatment Guidelines Panel regarding therapies for the COVID-19 Omicron variant, CMS created HCPCS code J0248 for VEKLURY™ (remdesivir) antiviral medication when administered in an outpatient setting. This code is available for use by all payers and is effective for dates of service on or after December 23, 2021:
- Long descriptor: Injection, remdesivir, 1 mg
- Short descriptor: Inj, remdesivir, 1 mg
Therefore, the MACs will determine Medicare coverage for HCPCS code J0248 for VEKLURY™.
