South Carolina DHHS Receives Innovative Maternal Health Award from CMS
The South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has been awarded the Transforming Maternal Health Model (TMaH) by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). This innovative program is dedicated to improving health outcomes and creating a safe, supportive environment for mothers and infants enrolled in Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). The TMaH program will provide access to care and resources to address individual physical health, mental health, and social needs during pregnancy and postpartum.
South Carolina has a strong foundation in maternal health, thanks to existing cross-state collaborations and innovative partnerships. Through the work of the SC Birth Outcomes Initiative (BOI), founded in 2011, and support from over 100 stakeholders statewide, significant improvements in maternal health access, equity, and outcomes have been achieved. The South Carolina Hospital Association (SCHA) has been an integral partner in the state’s work over the years through involvement in the state’s BOI data portal, collaborative grant writing with other organizations, sharing of critical information/best practices, and encouraging improvements in care. Their shared goal is to align with existing maternal health initiatives to guarantee better outcomes for mothers and infants, with hospitals playing an essential role. Dedication to providing excellent patient care and engagement with SCHA, state partners, and communities have been instrumental in advancing maternal health in the state.
The SCHA is excited to collaborate with SC DHHS and continue supporting the state’s hospitals through this grant. The TMaH Model aligns nicely with SCHA’s 2025 strategies to improve maternal and infant health. Through participation incentives, anchor partnerships, innovation partnerships, and AIM implementation, the SCHA looks forward to working alongside partners to further these shared goals and transform maternal care delivery and outcomes for families across the state.
The SCHA thanks everyone for their ongoing commitment to maternal health. They value the partnership and look forward to even more momentum toward improving maternal health across South Carolina.
