SCHA/NCHA Launches Carolinas Governance Series on Workforce Launches with New Certification Pathway for Trustees

The role of a hospital trustee continues to evolve, even more so in the current post-pandemic environment. To be prepared for the trends, decisions, and actions necessary to lead strong hospitals and health systems, trustees and administrators should take advantage of opportunities for shared learning experiences.

Following the success of the Fall 2021 joint virtual series, NCHA and SCHA have created an expanded and robust certification pathway for hospital trustees, including both a Foundations certification and an advanced certification.

The Foundations certification pathway will consist of 3 virtual sessions. The certification will focus on understanding the healthcare workforce, a top priority for health systems across the country. The first two virtual sessions will focus on what’s happened with the healthcare workforce post-pandemic and the board’s fiduciary duty to help guide strategic workforce planning. The third virtual session will focus on the trustee’s role in advancing policy to positively affect or influence the healthcare workforce.

For those who want to further expand their knowledgebase, and toolbox, NCHA and SCHA have created a one day in-person Capstone Summit which will dive deeper into all topics covered in the virtual sessions and will include interactive, small group, and table discussions. The in-person session is meant as a capstone and participants who complete both the Foundations Certificate and attend the in-person session will be awarded the 2022-23 Advanced Trustee Education Certificate.

All virtual sessions will be held on Thursdays from 11am-12:15pm and will be more than just PowerPoint presentations. The virtual sessions will be interactive allowing for comments, questions, and scenario discussions. All sessions will also be available on-demand following the live session.

The in-person Capstone Summit will be May 19, 2023, from 9:30am-3pm at a convenient location accessible to both states. See full details and registration information below. Register here.

Part I: The Global Perspective of the Healthcare Workforce Nationally and in the Carolinas

Thursday, September 29 | 11 am – 12:15 pm

The healthcare worker has experienced challenges and shortages before but nothing like the post-pandemic environment of today. Work has changed, expectations of work have changed, expectations of employees have changed, the labor market has changed. Employers in all industries, but especially healthcare, need to understand the current market, trends, supply and how to access demand for future talent. In this session, we’ll dive into the trends, supply of health professionals in each state, and prelude to strategic workforce planning to follow in session two.

Speakers:

Rob Brinkerhoff is National Managing Director, Healthcare Practice, for the Human Resources & Compensation Consulting practice within Gallagher’s Benefits and HR Consulting division. As practice leader, he oversees efforts to identify and assess healthcare industry trends and develops ways to help clients succeed. Rob has more than 20 years’ executive leadership experience in HR with large, high-performing health systems.

Erin P. Fraher, PhD, MPP is a tenured Associate Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Fraher directs the Carolina Health Workforce Research Center at the Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research. The Center’s mission is to provide the evidence needed to redesign health workforce training, deployment, and regulation in a rapidly changing health care system.

Katie Gaul is the Director of the South Carolina Office for Healthcare Workforce, or SCOHW, a division of the South Carolina Area Health Education Consortium (AHEC). She also holds a faculty appointment in Academic Affairs at the Medical University of South Carolina. The SCOHW studies issues that affect the balance of supply and demand for health professionals in South Carolina and develops accurate, reliable information that is widely available to support planning and policy decisions.

Part II: The Trustee’s Role as a Strategic Workforce Planner

Thursday, December 8 | 11 am – 12:15 pm

Understanding how work has changed, what employees are seeking today, and how employers should respond is a critical part of strategic workforce planning. This type of planning is not something just human resources should worry about but should be part of an organization’s strategy discussions. In this session, we’ll explore implications of the changes ahead for healthcare employers.

Speaker:

Mike Harbour is the Founder and President of Harbour Resources, a leadership coaching and consulting, training, and talent management firm based in Little Rock, Arkansas. Mike is a speaker, author, coach and the host of The LeadUp Podcast.

Part III: Trustees as Workforce Policy Partners

Thursday, March 9 | 11 am – 12:15 pm

Building on the previous two sessions, this session will explore how to apply the newly acquired knowledge of healthcare workforce trends to a trustee’s role in policy and advocacy. In this session, we’ll focus on policy issues that affect the healthcare workforce, specifically workplace violence, and how a trustee can help lead change.

In-Person Capstone Summit: Workforce Violence and its Impact on Both Patients and Staff

Friday, May 19 | 9:30 am – 3 pm

Location to be determined
