MUSC Health Charleston Wins SCHA 2022 Capstone Award

The South Carolina Hospital Association (SCHA) is proud to announce that MUSC Health Charleston is the winner of the 2022 SCHA Capstone Award, the highest honor the association bestows each year. The Award, given in partnership with Live Healthy SC, South Carolina’s official state health improvement plan, is based on a comprehensive scoring system designed to identify the hospital whose expansive and comprehensive efforts have produced extraordinary results for their patients, employees, and community.

Over the past decade, MUSC Health Charleston has become a national arbiter in the move towards a culture of high reliability in healthcare. The hospital’s 4-layer tiered daily brief program, combined with a well-honed performance management system, safety rounds, and patient-family advisory team, has created a commitment to continuous learning and problem-solving which flows throughout the organization.

“MUSC Health Charleston has been working toward high reliability for more than a decade to ensure quality outcomes and leadership accountability in our clinical system,” said Dr. Danielle Scheurer, Chief Quality Officer for MUSC Health Charleston. “Our goal is to become America’s healthiest academic campus not only for our patients, but also our workforce.”

At the same time, the hospital has also worked towards its goal of becoming the “healthiest academic medical campus” in America. A robust and holistic approach to employee wellness is embedded in the hospital’s infrastructure and day-to-day operations, with policy, systems, benefits, and environments in place to support optimal health.

MUSC Health Charleston has also demonstrated a deep organizational commitment to building healthier communities. The hospital has partnered with dozens of organizations to develop deep relationships and tackle the most difficult issues facing our communities, including work with the Diabetes Initiative of South Carolina, Healthy Me / Healthy SC program, Business Health Portfolio, Healthy Tri-County, Cares Clinic, Kids Eat Free summer program, Telehealth, and Boeing Center for Children’s wellness. Each of these long-standing programs addresses a current gap, disparity, or inequity in care, and closes that gap through a variety of well- tested best-practice interventions.

SCHA is tremendously proud of MUSC Health Charleston and all of our member hospitals for their commitment to these values and the extraordinary results they have produced for their patients, employees and communities. Together, we can continue to foster a culture of continuous improvement and build a better state of health.
