The Cuff Kit Project
McLeod Health’s Cuff Kit Project began with a simple story—a high-risk patient who walked daily to a pharmacy to check her blood pressure during pregnancy. Her determination inspired McLeod Health to create a nurse-driven program that empowers expectant mothers to monitor their health conveniently and effectively.
Through this initiative, any patient of a McLeod OB-GYN practice who is at least 20 weeks pregnant and has hypertension receives a portable blood pressure monitor, a tracking log, a red bracelet, and clear instructions on when to seek care. These tools help patients identify potential complications early and connect quickly with their care team or the McLeod Health Obstetric Emergency Department. This proactive approach has prevented serious health issues and improved outcomes for mothers and babies.
The McLeod Health Foundation supports the program with $7,500 annually, funding the purchase of approximately 150 blood pressure machines from the Preeclampsia Foundation. Led by Georgia Beasley, Director of Postpartum and Newborn Nursery at McLeod Regional, the project reflects a commitment to patient-centered care and innovation. Feedback from participants has been overwhelmingly positive, and advocates hope insurers will recognize the value of covering these devices for high-risk pregnancies.
