SC Birth Outcome Initiative

The South Carolina Birth Outcomes Initiative (SCBOI) brings together hospitals, health systems, and policymakers to improve maternal and infant health through collaboration and data-driven strategies. At the heart of this effort is the SCBOI Interactive Dashboard—a free, statewide resource that aggregates data from multiple sources to provide actionable insights at both the state and facility level.

The dashboard enables hospitals to monitor key indicators such as severe maternal morbidity, primary C-section rates, and preterm births, while comparing performance across time, perinatal levels, and statewide averages. Health systems benefit from the ability to analyze trends across multiple facilities, identify outliers, and target interventions where they are most needed. Advanced filtering options—such as maternal age, race, rurality, and payer source—allow for nuanced views of populations facing the greatest health challenges.

One of the dashboard’s major advantages is its accuracy and depth. Medicaid eligibility is verified through enrollment files, and race/ethnicity data is drawn from self-identified birth records, ensuring a more precise understanding of delivery demographics. Hospitals can export tables and visualizations for internal quality improvement and community awareness efforts.

As a key partner in SCBOI, the South Carolina Hospital Association (SCHA) supports hospitals in leveraging this tool for quality improvement, policy development, and AIM (Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health) measure tracking. By fostering collaboration and providing access to robust data, SCBOI empowers health systems to make informed decisions that lead to healthier mothers, infants, and communities across South Carolina.
