Maternal Health

South Carolina faces significant maternal health challenges. In 2021, the state’s pregnancy-related mortality ratio was 47.2 deaths per 100,000 live births—nearly 90% of these deaths were preventable. Thirteen labor and delivery units have closed since 2011, and more than half of counties are medically underserved. Nearly 60% of deliveries are covered by Medicaid, rising to 72% in rural areas, where rates of preterm birth and severe maternal morbidity are highest.

SCHA is deeply committed to advancing maternal health and ensuring every mother and baby in the state has the strongest possible start. We convene and collaborate with our members to support all efforts to strengthen physical, mental, and social health throughout pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum. This includes advocating for policies that enable safe, equitable, and accessible maternal services.

Through statewide initiatives and partnerships, SCHA helps hospitals implement practical approaches that reduce preventable complications and support families during the critical perinatal period. By fostering collaboration among clinicians, community organizations, and policymakers, SCHA ensures compassionate, high-quality care tailored to each mother’s needs. This includes championing the spread of the CenteringPregnancy model, supporting mother-infant wellness programs, and promoting the rise of comprehensive perinatal care, all of which have contributed to improved outcomes across South Carolina.

Improving maternal health remains a top priority for SCHA and its members, committed to building a healthier future for mothers, babies, and communities across South Carolina.
