South Carolina Maternal Health Innovation Collaborative
The South Carolina Maternal Health Innovation Collaborative (SCMHIC) is a statewide initiative dedicated to reducing maternal mortality and severe maternal morbidity through innovation, collaboration, and equity. Funded by a five-year HRSA Maternal Health Innovation grant (2023–2028), SCMHIC builds on existing programs like the Birth Outcomes Initiative and the Maternal Morbidity and Mortality Review Committee to address critical gaps in care, data, and workforce capacity.
SCMHIC’s strategic plan focuses on four key goals:
- Service Delivery: Expand access through telehealth, improve care coordination, and implement innovative tools like postpartum alert bracelets.
- Data & Surveillance: Strengthen statewide data systems to guide policy and improve transparency.
- Empowerment & Literacy: Launch a Maternal Health Resource Hub and increase awareness of warning signs and postpartum care.
- Workforce Development: Support provider training, scholarships, and virtual platforms to grow the maternal health workforce.
Together, these efforts aim to transform maternal health by fostering collaboration, innovation, and long-term improvements across the
state. The end goal is a South Carolina where every mother thrives—supported by a unified, forward-thinking maternal health system that ensures equitable access to high-quality care.
