Raising Awareness About Physician Burnout

A 2023 American Psychological Association survey found that 89% of U.S. adults feel stressed during the holidays, with 41% reporting higher stress levels than other times of the year. As we enter the holiday season, we want to raise awareness about the mental health of one of our most critical populations — our doctors.

This year we are proud to partner with the South Carolina Medical Association (SCMA) to share these posters drawing attention to some pretty concerning statistics related to our physician community:

  • In 2021, 1 in 5 doctors planned to leave the profession in the next 2 years.

  • In 2021, 1 in 10 physicians considered or attempted suicide. Each year, roughly 400 physicians die by suicide.

  • In 2021, 61% of physicians reported often feeling symptoms of burnout, but only 14% sought help.

And the message is simple: Burn out? Reach out! As the ones who provide care to us in our most vulnerable times, we should not let them suffer in silence. We encourage you to talk to your physicians about the signs of burnout and the cooperative steps you can take to address it.

These custom Burn Out? Reach out! posters to help support our physician community. Please consider sharing this opportunity with your physician leaders and staff. If you are interested in learning more about the posters or the campaign, reach out to Nina Jackson with SCMA.
