diverse_data_collection.jpgThe Institute for Diversity in Health Management's "The State of Healthcare Diversity and Disparities: A Benchmark Study of U.S. Hospitals.”  This survey will allow the hospital field, for the first time, to assess its progress toward inclusion and the elimination of health disparities.

The survey focuses on four specific dimensions of health care management:

  • Effectively Engaging the Diverse Communities that the Organization Serves:  Assessing community needs and community engagement; Interacting with community leaders and members; Collaborating with the community to improve the public’s health and to access available community resources.
  • Expanding the Diversity of the Organization’s Governance Body and Leadership Team: Ensuring that the governing body and executive leadership representation reflect the diverse populations served; Strategic planning for providing quality and safe care for all; Ensuring that the hospital’s environment, policies and practices support quality health care for all patient populations.
  • Strengthening a Diverse Workforce throughout the Organization: Planning and implementing human resources programs that recruit, orient and train a diverse staff to provide culturally and linguistically appropriate care.
  • Delivering Culturally and Linguistically Competent Patient Care throughout the Organization: Including cultural and linguistic competence in the design, administration and delivery of effective services; Communicating with patients and families in patients’ own languages; Being responsive to patients’ cultural needs; Providing quality language services.

The results of the survey will be kept completely confidential and used to compile a database that will allow health care organizations to compare their efforts to those of others.  The data also will be used to help the Institute recognize hospitals as leaders in the field of promoting diversity within health care.
